You don't take a photograph. You ask, quietly, to borrow it. ~Author Unknown

for everyone
Over the past couple of weeks Col and I have been watching the development of the tawny chicks in a nest up in the tall gums behind our house.
This monrning at about 5:45am Col was just leaving for work when he saw one of the chicks on the ground right near our back deck.
We picked it up and put it in a box on the back deck table, because i was worried about the cats, and called the local wildlife carers.
Her advice was that this is normal, the chicks naturally spend 3 or 4 days on the ground after they leave the nest. She said we had 2 options, put it back on the ground or keep it in the box during the day and let it out at night so the parents can still keep feeding it.
Anyway, I guess the little fella made up his own mind because he pushed his way out of the box as soon as i went inside. I now have the cats locked inside and I'm keeping an eye on him through the window. I can hear him calling to his parents and I can hear them replying.
I also managed to spot the 2nd chick onthe ground in the neighbour's yard. It has since taken cover under the boat that is trailered there.
Right now it is totally pouring rain and I am working really hard on resisting the temptation to go and bring the poor little fluff bundle inside. They are both out of the worst of it though.

So far they seem (both of them) to be perfectly happy pretending to be sticks..... pity that doesn't work so well next to a blue railing or a metal boat trailer frame lol. They are sooo cute!

AWWWWWWWWWWWW........... what cute little fluffybundles.
I want one. Can I have one PLEEEEEEEEEEASE?

Look at those little faces. Lovely shots Jay. Hope they all manage to pull through and become adults. Nature can be cruel and it is so tempting to intervene. I wouldn't blame you for trying though. Who could resist such a sorrowful look? Its like the one I use to get female attention. Hehe.

I am hoping to get some good bald eagle shots in March cos I just accidentally bought myself a new 140-600mm lens. Opps! Finger slipped on the button early new years day. ;-)

Is everybody still in one piece Julie? any updates

These are great close-up shots Julie!!! They are so endearing. Good luck to all of them that they make it through the transition to flight and safety.

I have to admit, i was hoping that the parent would come to the baby and as the sun set last night, our little visitor started calling for its parents. Seems the message back from mum and dad must have been " get your fluffy butt over here!" Misery Guts fluttered over to the roof of our neighbour's garage, a flight of about 3 or 4m (about the same in yards) and settled in the gutter for a while. Still hopeful, I set the camera to video and just let it run while i watched from inside. MG certainly set up a howling but still no parental visit, so he scrabbled up to the roof ridge. From there he flew quite a way over to another garage roof that is right up close to the very leafy trees that the parents calls were coming from. That's the last we have seen of either chick. A successful renunion with parents and the perfect leafy place to hide away. I can still hear the chick's raspy calls and the deep, almost 'doof doof', replied of the parents. I recorded about 12 minutes of video that I love having as a record but pretty sure it would bore the socks off the rest of you.

Julie, may i quietly borrow a photograph of these lil guys, to draw in sketchfu??
jayel58 wrote on Jan 8, '11
LOL I think you will have to take a rain check Mop! there are a few in front of you.

No they are not owls, even though most call them tawny frogmouth owls. They are noctural hunters but when it comes down to specifics, they are not as strong as owls, their prey tends to be small reptiles, frogs and large insects. They don't get the calcium that most owls do so their talons are much weaker. Owls fly around at night hunting food, but Tawny Frogmouths generally remain sitting very still on a low perch, and wait for food to come to them. They catch prey with their beaks, and sometimes drop from their perch onto the prey on the ground.
Tawny frogmouth pairs stay together until one of the pair dies. (which makes me really sad when i see on dead on the road having been hit by a car while hunting insects) They breed from August to December. They usually use the same nest each year, and must make repairs to their loose, untidy platforms of sticks. After mating with the male, the female lays two or three eggs onto a lining of green leaves in the nest. Both male and female take turns sitting on the eggs to incubate them until they hatch about 30 days later. Both parents help feed the chicks. The chicks move to the edge of the nest and direct their droppings over the edge. About 25 days after hatching, the chicks are ready to leave the nest and lead their own lives.

The are related to nightjars.
